So, it's a new year and you're looking to change your life for the better.
When we have the urge to make a change we think will benefit us, such as; get healthy; get organised; live life to the full; find new hobbies; spend less/save more; stop procrastinating; start studying for something or [insert your own goals here] ... in that moment you are filled with motivation and feel confident that you will succeed.
What drives that motivation and confidence?
Why does it seem to last such a short time?
If I could stay as motivated as I was in the beginning this would be easy!
In that moment, you fully believe that you are capable and you can imagine clearly how happy you will be once you've achieved that goal. But this soon changes, eventually all we can see is; how dificult this is and how hard it will be to continue, not to mention all the obstacles like distractions and temptations that soon appear.
After a while, our enthusiasm often dissipates, we start to tell ourselves "I can't do it" "It's too much effort" or "maybe I don't want this after all". If your goal is worth achieving then don't listen to these influences, that voice of discouragement is always going to be there when our motivation weakens but it shouldn't make you believe these things are true. You know how great it would be if you could just have it right now, so it must be worth the effort! Accept this is going to be hard work, and keep on going.
In order to stay motivated It's very helpful to:
- Continue to visualize yourself achieving your goal just like in the beginning.
- Remind yourself of what you are aiming for on a regular basis, read stories of others who have done the same, find people who share the same or similar goals if possible, these things help motivate us and keep us focused on what we want.
- Get enough rest!! If your brain and body are tired then you're bound to struggle with motivation, you can't expect to be jumping into action when you're body hasn't rested and your brain hasn't de-stressed. Go to sleep at sensible times, and don't over-sleep either, this drains you even more.
- Remember, Once new habits are formed they become embedded in our routine and we find it much easier to "just do it". In the beginning we have to think about it first and waste time and energy convincing ourselves to get up and go... but eventually you're doing it before you've had time to question whether you're "feeling up to it" today. So stick with it, it gets easier!
Good luck to you all of you aiming for something in the new year, you'll certainly be thanking yourselves down the line!
