What is Hypnosis & Psychotherapy?
Simply put, Hypnosis or Hypnotherapy is a form of therapy that utilises Trance states. (see below for more information)
Psychotherapy is therapy for the mind where our medication is psychological change.
What is Solution Focused?
Solution Focused is a modern therapeutic approach where the main concern lies in the finding of solutions to our problems instead of the traditional route of finding what might be the cause.
In Traditional Therapy, the therapist would work discover an "underlying cause" for their clients issues. In Hypnotherapy this would involve "age regression" where the client will revisit and relive upsetting or traumatic moments of the past that may have been where their problems began. This process can understandably be a difficult one, and thanks to the work of Milton Erickson, we now know it is not necessary to identify a route cause of our problems for us to move forward.
What is trance?
Trance is a very ordinary state of mind that we experience many times each day. It is merely when the whole of the mind's attention becomes focused on one thing.
You likely drift in and out of trance states whilst; driving, walking, watching the television or even whilst you are reading the words written on this page. During trance you are completely conscious, able to do what you want and it is no different in therapy (phew!).
Trance is an important tool that allows the subconscious mind to process the events of our day whilst our conscious mind is relaxed.
What happens in an appointment?
Explained simply, each appointment has two main steps.
The first step is to learn about the brain and our problems. Depending on the type of issue presented, we will cover information about stress, thought processes, habit forming and chemicals in the body all relating personally to your particular symptoms. This will help you to understand how these symptoms are created, what exacerbates them and what you can do to either change them or cope better with them.
The Second step is the hypnosis. During Hypnosis we can tackle stress, use hypnotic techniques to address any particular issues and gain access to the subconscious mind. We do this to help you adapt to new ways of thinking, new ways of behaving, creating new neural networks and essentially "rewiring the brain".
Hypnosis is a unique, enjoyable and relaxing process.
What does being hypnotised feel like?
Being Hypnotised in therapy is quite different to the street hypnosis or Derren Brown type of experience. In these performances, people appear to be tricked or confused and made to do silly things.
Don't worry, this will not be the case during Hypnotherapy. During the Hypnosis in your therapy appointments, you are fully conscious throughout the experience. Each person will experience Hypnosis differently, but generally you just feel very relaxed and comfortable.
Can anyone be hypnotised?
Fortunately yes, everybody can be Hypnotised because everyone can go into trance.
For a moment, imagine how you get from your house into town... which way do you turn as you go out the front door? What houses or shops do you pass on your journey? and before you go, where did you put your keys? If you can answer these questions, then congratulations! You've successfully used Trance.
We use trance to imagine things, to visualise scenarios, remember the past, ponder the future etc. etc. Trance allows us to concentrate at higher levels so we can learn and problem solve.
But most importantly, you cannot be hypnotised if you do not want to be hypnotised. It's as simple as that. (Phew!)
How long does Hypnotherapy last?
Solution focused Hypnotherapy uses the best techniques derived from Solution Focused Brief Therapy. I will help you to achieve results that are long lasting, giving you the tools to maintain your positive changes and take control of your life in a relatively short amount of appointments.
All treatments (except the Smoking Cessation) are carried out in sessions 50 minutes long.
Depression, Anxiety, Anger and most other issues, on average take 8 to 12 sessions.
The number of sessions you attend can be more or less depending on your own experience. You have the control in therapy, you decide the steps forward and you finish therapy whenever you feel you are ready to.
Fears & Phobias are likely to take 3 sessions.
If you need the phobia dealt with quickly, say for example you need to conquer your phobia of flying before a holiday coming up, then we will move your 3 sessions closer to each other to meet those needs.
The Smoking Cessation session is a single 120 minute session, if you are not struggling with any major issues.
If you feel you suffer with anxiety or are highly stressed for example, then please look into receiving treatment for those issues instead. Our chances of success can be reduced if we are really suffering in other areas of our lives. We can tackle a smoking addiction during treatment of the other issues when you feel ready for it.
If you haven't found the information relevant to your issues, please contact me. Otherwise you can arrange a free consultation where we can discuss in depth how therapy will be used to help you tackle your issues and reach your goals.
