Tinnitus is a noise heard continuously from inside the body rather than outside, this is usually a ringing but can also be another sound such as buzzing, hissing or whistling.
Around 1 in every 10 people experience persistent Tinnitus and 1 in every 100 people experience tinnitus on such a level that it disrupts their day to day lives causing a lack of concentration and a disturbance of sleep. This can then have knock on effects causing issues such as stress, depression, anxiety or anger to develop.
Before seeking Hypnotherapy as treatment.
Treatment for this issue should not start with Hypnotherapy, a trip to the doctors will allow for a diagnosis of what might be causing your Tinnitus. Sometimes it is caused by earwax or an infection so in cases like this it can be treated and often cured.
However, If you have already been diagnosed and there is no physical cause and no cure, then Hypnotherapy could be a great option for helping you to manage and cope with your Tinnitus.
Auditory blocking is our brains natural ability of tuning out to sounds that are not deemed important at that time. For example right now as you are reading this you may not be consciously aware of the sounds of traffic outside, or the electrical buzz of appliances in the room. When you turn your attention back to it, you "tune back in" to the sounds that are present.
This means it is possible for you to be able to be less aware of tinnitus through creating a calm and comfortable state of mind. Auditory blocking cannot be the end goal of therapy as the more you try not to hear the noise, the more your attention is drawn towards it and the more it becomes a problem.
Can Hypnotherapy help tinnitus?
Hypnotherapy cannot cure tinnitus, but it is an effective way of dealing with the issue by changing the way you perceive your tinnitus and helping you to cope better with the issue.
In therapy you will learn about how the brain works to create stress and how this knowledge can be used to manage stress. You will also learn about issues such as anger, anxiety and depression and how this can affect energy levels, motivation and more.
Hypnosis is then used to relieve stress and allows the mind adapt to new ways of thinking and behaving. This is sometimes called rewiring the brain as we create new neural pathways in the brain, learning how to react differently to situations.
